The Rocky Horror Show

October 30 - November 15, 2009

Extra Show:  Halloweeen Night - 11:00 PM

Book, Music and Lyics by Richard O'Brien

Directed by Wil Kilroy

On a dark and stormy night, Brad and Janet have car trouble and take refuge in an old castle.  Their lives are turned upside down by Frank N. Furter and his household of strange Transylvanians in this raucous, cult-classic musical that has been performed around the world.

Sorry, this show is non-interactive, but we DO encourage dressing up as your favorite Rocky character and competing for special prizes.

Approximate running time, 1:45, including intermisson.

Director's Notes

I am thrilled to return to The Portland Players, having directed here long ago with many of the same terrific people that comprise a stellar group of dedicated theatre artists.  Having enjoyed a midnight show of Rocky Horror years ago in New York City, I was excited to mount this stage production and the adventure has been terrific.  The talented cast and crew have collaborated together with a sense of reverence for the beloved film along with respect for the original stage script - and of course we have added our own creative flair.  The Rocky Horror Show began as a stage production in London in 1973, premiered in Los Angeles in 1974 and on Broadway for a short run in 1975 - the same year the film, titled The Rocky Horror Picture Show, was produced.  Although the film was at first rather unpopular, small groups of dedicated fans continued to flock to the film, midnight showings were born, and the rest is history!  We realize many of you have enjoyed the film version, with props and "call-backs", and while we ask you to refrain from those for the safety and concentration of our "live" actors, we hope this will give you a chance to sit back and simply enjoy the wildly unique characters, vibrant songs, and wonderfully bizarre situations of the stage version of this "cult" classic.
