Last of the Red Hot Lovers

November 2 - 18, 2007

Directed by Michael Rafkin

Written by Neil Simon

Neil Simon’s hilarious take on a male’s midlife crisis.  Barney realizes his tranquil and faithful life has rendered little excitement as he sets out to have an “extra-marital fling…before life passes him by.”  Will Barney succeed in his quest or will his honesty and decency hold him back?

Director’s Notes

Last of the Red Hot Lovers is vintage Neil Simon. Written in 1969, it is a product of the golden age of American humor. It parodies the last gasp of the ‘60’s "free love" movement and the era of open sexual experimentation. What makes it so delicious is the hapless nature of sweet, inept, middle aged Barney Cashman and the three totally different women he tries to seduce to make his mid life fantasies become real. I am tempted to offer that old cliché "they don’t write comedies like this anymore." I wish they did. It has been a real pleasure to work with everyone involved in this production. It is not often a comedy comes along with only two actors on stage at a time. It has meant a rare chance to work with all the actors intensely, which is my favorite thing to do. I hope this blast from the past tickles you as much as it has us. ENJOY!!
